In Kazakhstan, cryptocurrency is under increased government control. It is not recognized as legal tender, meaning it cannot be used to pay for goods and services within the country. However, this does not prevent the use of digital assets as an investment tool or for certifying property rights.
Cryptocurrency is not legal tender in Kazakhstan but can be used for investment and property certification.
Official Platforms — AIFC
All cryptocurrency operations in Kazakhstan, including P2P trading, must be conducted through licensed platforms registered with the Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC).
AIFC is a special economic zone created to attract investments and develop financial technologies, including the digital asset market. It operates under its own legal framework and regulatory mechanisms, making cryptocurrency transactions legal and secure.
Only AIFC-registered platforms are allowed to offer cryptocurrency trading in Kazakhstan.
What does this mean?
- Only exchanges and brokers registered with the AIFC are authorized to offer cryptocurrency trading services.
- Users trading through licensed platforms are protected by law, minimizing risks of fraud and legal consequences.
Trading through licensed platforms provides legal protection and reduces fraud risks.
As of the publication date, 10 exchanges are registered with the AIFC, including Onyx Trade Ltd., Neyco Ltd., Swiftex.io Limited, and others.
Enhanced Transaction Monitoring
Kazakhstani banks are required to monitor cryptocurrency transactions and report suspicious activities. Special attention is given to:
- Single transactions exceeding $1,000. These trigger enhanced due diligence by banks, including verifying the source of funds, transaction history, and links to cryptocurrency exchanges.
- Transfers to foreign exchanges. Banks automatically block transfers to foreign crypto exchanges not registered with the AIFC.
- Restrictions for multi-card users. Users with more than five payment cards face limits: no more than three transfers per month up to ₸100,000 to unlicensed platforms.
Transactions over $1,000 and transfers to unlicensed platforms are subject to strict monitoring and limitations.
These measures aim to combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and offshore capital outflow.
To avoid issues, use only official platforms and comply with established rules.
Use official AIFC platforms to avoid legal risks and blocked transactions.
